Generation No. 3

7. PLEASANT3 WHITE (JOHN2, "FATHER"1) was born June 25, 1818 in Tennessee, and died December 21, 1895 in Pike Co., Arkansas. He married NANCY ANN ROSE February 28, 1847 in Pike Co., Arkansas, daughter of JOHN ROSE and MARY H.. She was born September 28, 1829 in Clark Co., Arkansas, and died July 12, 1907 in Quanah, Hardeman Co., Texas.

Notes for PLEASANT WHITE:
Information about Pleasant White and Nancy Ann Rose is based on : White family Bible in possession of Oleta White Williams, census records, "Corinth Revisited by Its Kinfolks", by Lucille Westbrook, gravestone of N. A. White.

Pleasant White was a boy of eleven years when he accompanied his father on their pioneer trip to Pike County, Arkansas, in 1829. They evidently liked what they saw because they went back to Tennessee and returned to Arkansas with Martha White, the mother of the family, and the rest of the children who were not already married.

Pleasant White was a charter member of the Corinth Church of Christ, the second Church of Christ organized in Arkansas.

Notes for NANCY ANN ROSE:
Nancy Ann Rose was orphaned and we are still searching for her roots. She was a small, pretty lady with much energy and intelligence. She served as a midwife to many of the women in her community and rode a horse side-saddle to get to her destinations. Oleta White Williams is still in possession of a small hand-held lantern her grandmother carried when she went out at night to deliver babies.

Married to a prosperous farmer and general store owner, she had a lovely home, china dishes, monogrammed silverware, and household help. She and her husband, Pleasant, were charter members of the Corinth Church of Christ. She does not appear "worn out" as many of the women of her day from the county look in pictures from this era. I have a strong feeling that she was much like her youngest grand-daughter, Oleta Ercell White. From the strong family resemblance in her face, I can see that she was brave, hard-working, deeply religious, independent, and protective of her family. Her love of helping others lives on in the many descendants who have chosen the medical and teaching professions.

After the death of her husband, Pleasant White, Nancy Ann White moved to Quanah, Texas, to live with her daughter, Aunt "Sallie" White Jones, wife of Uncle Nathan Levi Jones. She died there in 1907 and was buried in Quanah Cemetery.

Children of PLEASANT WHITE and NANCY ROSE are:
  1. ANTHONY C.4 WHITE, b. April 28, 1848, Brewer Twp., Pike Co., Arkansas; d. Oct 1849, Brewer Twp., Pike Co., Arkansas.

    Notes for LOIS HAZEL WHITE:
Tullis and Lois were fraternal twins. They were healthy babies, but neither of them survived early childhood. Tullis, the little boy, died of an infectious disease, probably whooping cough. Lois died from accidently sucking a piece of popcorn down her windpipe. She didn't die immediately, but a few days later when the foreign object blocking the bronchial tube caused infection. Both deaths would have been so easily treated today. Grandmother Leona was pregnant with Oleta when Lois died. She was 38 years old and had already had seven children. No wonder pictures of her in her forties show a care worn lady. Yet I never heard her complain about anything. By the time I was born, Grandmother was well into her seventies. She still crocheted beautifully, dipped snuff in the afternoon to relax, and loved to fish with a cane pole better than anyone I ever knew. She was never critical of me and always said that I was "awfully sweet". She was the kind of grandmother every child should have. - - Charlotte Rose Williams Jeffers, August 11, 1998.

  9. OLETA ERCELL WHITE, b. November 20, 1912, Nashville, Arkansas; m. CHARLES WITHROW WILLIAMS, July 15, 1934; b. September 04, 1907, Nashville, Arkansas.
